There are great artists, and then there are legends. On Jan. 10, 2026, the world lost Bob Weir, one of the most authentic music legends to ever live.
Bobby spent a lifetime proving that you don’t have to follow the industry standard to achieve greatness. He was a free spirit and never cared for the industry’s arbitrary rules, but he always respected the power of music to transcend the ordinary.
When Jerry Garcia passed in 1995, Bobby didn't let the Grateful Dead movement fade; he carried the torch for another 30 years, bridging the gap for the next generation. His final show was this past summer in San Franciso — the end of a 60-year run of dedication to the music.
In the music industry, there is a standard playbook: three-minute radio edits, predictable hooks, and chasing the latest trend to stay on the charts. Bobby and the Grateful Dead famously tore up that playbook. They didn't play for the critics or the record labels — they played for the folks in the audience, the ones who let music course through their veins, with the long jam having more lifeblood than any quick “hit”.
At Lear Investment Management, we find our North Star in that same spirit of independence. The investment industry is obsessed with "style boxes" and mass-produced, mediocre products designed for profits for the corporation — at the expense of the investor.
Bobby’s 60-year journey in the music business is a reminder that you don't have to conform to have success. You just have to be excellent, stay independent, and keep the "fans" (our clients) at the heart of every note you play.
We hope his spirit lives on for another generation of free thinkers who realize that true success comes from being "The Other One." You don't build a legacy by following the crowd, you build it by believing in your sound and playing it with conviction.
